Our farm is the central feature of our property and our lifestyle.

People sometimes ask us, "What animals do you raise?''  Well, chickens, turkeys, muscovy ducks, rabbits, pigs, beef and dairy cows, and one pampered pony.  That is, of course, not to mention the ample supply of farm cats.

If you haven't got the impression yet, let me just say, our farm is different.  We have a highly diversified mix of plants and animals.  It is a small farm, but it yields quite a lot.  We endeavour to house the animals in a way that is as close to their natural situation as possible, while providing for a much greater human interaction than normal.  Our neighbour decribes our place as 'like a petting zoo', since all the animals are comfortable with, and indeed seem to enjoy human interaction.  Every creature has a name, they are all spoken to, and  they are treated with as much love and respect as possible.  We believe that every creature benefits from compassion and love, even if their destiny is to find their way onto our table as a roast.   In fact, we believe that the experience of the creature drastically effects the quality of the meat they yield.  Furthermore, all the animals are permitted to interact with each other, as they would do in nature, and for the most part, they are free-range.  This affords them the opportunity to forage for their own highly varied and biologically-appropriate food.  Also, this permits the animals to remain healthy and lean from fresh air, exercise and the sense of freedom.

A further difference of our farm is that the plants are also highly diversified and integrated.  Plantings are mixed, with ground covers, root crops, trees, and vines all inhabiting the same beds.  This permits us to grow much more in very little space, and takes advantage of the benevolent interrelationship between different types of plants.  For example, the dill flower attracts pollinators to the squash, while the thyme plant repells pests from the tomato.  Because these plants take up different areas in the sunlight and the soil, they do not detract from one another.  We use the manure from the animals to fertilize the garden, and we use the garden produce to feed the animals.
